REFLECTION

Gifts for All Believers

by Judy Webb

“There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.” (1 Corinthians 12:6)

We have heard about Spiritual Gifts, and many of us maybe have even taken a class on them. While participating in a teaching of these gifts could be helpful, it isn’t necessary to understand and employ them. As Christians, all have at least one Spiritual Gift. We can identify them by considering what we are good at, what we have a passion for, the things that spark our interest and provide joy.

We can even identify the gifts of others we know. How about on Sunday morning when the choir praises God, or a soloist sings of the goodness of God? Don’t you often comment what a wonderful gift they have? There is no need to envy another’s gift. We are all given a special gift and your gift is evidence of the Spirit working in a Believer’s life. We are to use this gift freely for the benefit of others.

“For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.” (1 Corinthians 12:13)

Our gifts are useful in serving the Christian communities where we live and worship. Those with the gift of ‘helps’ are right there front and center when there is a need. Bringing food to a grieving family, taking on the role of usher for Sunday services, coming alongside a new believer and answering their questions. Those with the gift of administration enjoy keeping things running smoothly, a creative communication gift surfaces as a songwriter or playwright, or novelist.

There is no end to the usefulness of our gifts in helping others and glorifying God. More than likely when you discover your gift you will realize it is also your passion. God is amazing, isn't He?

PRAYER

Dear Jesus,

Thank you for Spiritual Gifts. They are not only useful to us, but they often fill a need in our own lives. To be passionate about something I am good at, is a double blessing. Thank you, Jesus. Amen.
