Something Greater
by Jennifer Jerrome
"I tell you that something greater than the temple is here." (v. 6)
Listen up, Pharisees! Your preoccupation with the law is keeping you from seeing what’s right in front of you. Something is happening, far greater than any Sabbath rules. Turn your eyes towards the man called Jesus and you will see the truth of God’s Law.
He may not be what you thought, but he is the fulfillment of God’s promises. Rules and laws are not what saves – HE saves.
If your rules are not accompanied by mercy, then throw them away because they are meaningless. Adopt God’s Law of compassion and you will surely see life in abundance.
…If only the Pharisees had listened. Instead, they watched as He performed a miraculous healing and then proceeded to mercilessly condemn him.
But Jesus didn’t let that stop him because He came not to break the rules, but to BE the rule. He is the example to follow. He is the Sacrifice - the true Temple of God. He is the “something greater” that is happening here. Don’t miss it!
PRAYER PRACTICE
Jesus, thank you for serving as Lord of the Sabbath and teaching us what’s important. It’s not about the rules, it’s about mercy and kindness. May we keep our eyes focused on you and look unto you for the truth. Amen
