REFLECTION

Amen Indeed

by Judy Webb

“Be silent, Israel, and listen! You have now become the people of the Lord your God.” (Deuteronomy 27:9)

For years the Israelites have been wandering the desert. So much has happened to them and so many lessons have been learned...often the hard way. Now, finally, their destination is in sight. Moses has prepared them for this moment and now Joshua will lead them the final way as they step into the Promised Land. It is a momentous time, one that will be remembered and referred to for ages to come.

"Obey the Lord your God and follow his commands and decrees that I give you today.” (Deuteronomy 27:10)

The people, now, only have to take the next step; they are poised to cross over into their long-awaited home where they will be free, where they can finally say, "Amen!" We have survived and arrived at the place God has promised. Now they only need to obey God and they will thrive.

We may often feel as if we have been on an incredibly long journey in our lives too. But like the Israelites, God has been with us, we only needed to lean on him and trust his Word. Our venture through life has had many twists and turns and sometimes even deep valleys where we thought we would never surface to breathe a fresh breath of safety and well-being. But when we are faithful, God is too. He makes himself known to us and reaches out to us to just grab hold of this hand. He wants to pull us out of the "slimy pit, out of the muck and mire; and set our feet on a rock and give us a firm place to stand." (Psalm 40:2)

In those final moments, when we approach the threshold of our Promised Land may we hear the words, "Then all the people said, Amen!"

PRAYER

Thank you Lord, for your faithfulness to us, for your Perfect Presence in our lives. Keep our eyes and hearts open to your activity around us and bring us safely home to our final Amen.
