Look in the Book

The single biggest problem with communication is the illusion that it has occurred. Yes, George Bernard Shaw is credited with this well-known saying, even though he probably never said it. But as I read today's passage, I was struck about how this applies to James' words: "do not merely listen to the word....Do what it says." Anyone who has raised kids is very familiar with the 'selective listening' they employ, especially during their teen years:

You never told me to make my bed!
I thought my curfew was midnight, not ten a.m.
You mean I was supposed to empty the dishwasher today??

James is reminding his brother and sisters that the word of God is "living and active" (Hebrews 4:12). It's not a book you read and enjoy, then put back on the shelf to grow dusty. It is God-inspired guidance for how to live a life that is full of joy, purpose and hope of the promise of eternal life in Jesus.

Does God care whether I wear a blue shirt or a red shirt? The short answer: no. The long answer: God is fascinated with everything about you and me. Every hair on our head is numbered. Jesus reminds us to "seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things [what to wear, what to eat, how to live our lives] will be added unto you" (Matthew 25:33).

Everything? Yes, everything. It's all in the book - be sure to look. And to listen. And to do what it says. Every day, take time with God. He is eager to meet you and he delights in spending time with you.

PRAYER

Lord, I often read your word and fail to do what it says. Help me today and every day to listen, to act and to follow you. Amen.
