Ministry of Love, Ministry of the Gospel
by Judy Webb
“Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God, but our lives as well.” (1 Thessalonians 2:8)
This is such a beautiful verse, telling of Paul's love for the people he was ministering to. This explains how the work of the Gospel isn’t really work when it is done out of love. Paul was a servant to the people, just as Jesus was a servant to us. “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45)
Paul even held down a job while he ministered to the people. Therefore, the gospel didn’t cost the Thessalonians a penny. He encouraged the people to follow his lead, as he followed Jesus. (1 Corinthians 11:1) Paul’s message and life was consistent so he could tell the Thessalonians to live the same way.
Paul’s self-support showed that he wasn’t working for profit. (Was he a volunteer?) There was a deep affection from his charges. Like the familiar saying, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” This is very true, even today—or maybe especially today. Paul treated new believers with loving care. Never pulling rank on them. He knew they required a gentle lead.
“We encouraged, comforted, and urged you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom.” (1 Thessalonians 2:12)
There is power in the Word of God to change lives. (Philippians 2:13) The people could discern Paul’s teachings were of God, not of man. We are unworthy…but we are to walk worthy and submit ourselves to the control of the Holy Spirit.
PRAYER
Dear Jesus,
Thank you for Paul's example to love those we are trying to reach for You. It is love and especially Your unconditional love that changes everything. Heavy-handed tactics are out of place when telling the world about You and the salvation you have provided. Your example of using gentle words and loving gestures is what will win them over. Amen.
Good job, Judy.
