DAILY READING
REFLECTION
Grace not Perfection
By Judy Webb
If you started reading today and thought to yourself, this is so familiar, you would be right. For whatever reason the devotion from last Thursday posted today as well. I was having a conversation this morning with a friend, beating myself up over the fact of this error. She stopped me mid-sentence and said I was thinking about this all wrong. She suggested that there just might have been something in the devotion from last week that a reader may have missed, or perhaps they didn't read the piece at all. Just maybe God wanted them to see it today. So, let's go with that and move on.
The actual text for today, Hebrews 2:14-15 is about Jesus' humanity, how he was flesh and blood, but unlike us, he was perfect. No mistakes or errors in is life. We, you and I, err all the time, as much as we want to deny that fact. It would be lovely to be perfect and never have to walk back any or our words or actions. Jesus' perfection is ours to strive for, even if we know we will never attain it -- but what a worth-while ambition.
Satan constantly reminds me of my sinful ways when he points out my mistakes and then makes them to show up in bold lettering. I immediately think less of myself and question things I should never doubt. The text for today totally smashes that reasoning. "by His death he might break the power of him who olds the power of death." (v. 14b) Shame we might feel when we recognize our imperfection, can be cast aside as we proclaim our freedom in the Gospel, our freedom in Jesus - who alone is perfect.
We can all testify to Grace, "for because of Jesus "sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law but under grace." (Romans 6:14)
PRAYER
Dear Jesus,
Help each of us to claim your grace. Show us how to turn to you for wisdom and not expect perfection in all we do. We are not YOU!. But we have You in our lives to point us to the path you have prepared for us. Come Holy Spirit. Amen.
