Great is the Lord!
by Elaine Pierce
I have really enjoyed connecting the psalms with contemporary music this summer. The sermon series is appropriately named, "Songs of Summer." You can't help but tap your toes and smile when you hear Pharrell sing "Happy," can you? As we read Psalm 96, we recognize that worshiping God and enjoying his presence brings us joy that is beyond measure.
Psalm 96 paints a picture of a God who is like no other. Take a look at some of this imagery:
"Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and glory are in his sanctuary." (v. 6)
"Tremble before him, all the earth" (v. 9)
"Let the heavens rejoice, let all the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it; let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy."
(v. 11-12)
Can you picture trees singing? All the earth trembling? Everyone on earth declaring his glory? This is a foreshadowing of what heaven will be like! Day after day we will sing his praises, and it won't get old. It won't be boring. We will sing a new song, and we will delight in his presence.
Yes, we will be happy. But we will be so much more than happy. Take time this week to read Psalm 96. Perhaps you could start every day by reading this psalm. As we worship God, and recognize his glory and strength, his power and majesty, we are filled with gratitude for what he has done and is doing for us. What a faithful God we serve!
PRAYER
Thank you, Lord, for Psalm 96, and for all scripture that encourages us, challenges us, and reminds of who you are and who we serve. May our worship be worthy of you. Great is our Lord, and most worthy of praise. Amen.
