A New and Better Way!
By Judy Webb
"This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time," declares the Lord. "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God and they will be my people."
Throughout the Bible, God reveals His plan of redemption through a series of covenants. When reading the story of Abraham and his travels to an unknown destination, we are witness to a faithful man who followed God's commanding words...Go! The foundational promise of God to Abraham and his descendant, land, and blessing. (Genesis 12:1-3)
The Mosaic or Sinai Covenant gave Israel the law, the sacrifices and the choice of blessing or curse. (Exodus 19) The fascinating story of Moses' rescue of the Israelites and their subsequent 40-year adventure to discover the promised land, is the basis of this covenant.
The Davidic Covenant is a promise made by God to King David, establishing his lineage and ensuring that his descendant would rule forever. Leading to the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ (2 Samuel 7).

New testament writers affirm this connection, identifying Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of the covenant. (Luke 1:32-33) Jesus instituted the New Covenant by His death on the cross, and he specifically instituted the recognition and remembrance of it with the bread and the cup. (Matthew 26:28, Mark 14:24, Luke 22:20)
While this New Covenant is our focus, the historic journey to this place and time reveals our God in all His Glory. The New Covenant of grace provides three main blessings:
Inner transformation, a change of minds and hearts as God works obedience in us with the Gospel
New relationship, a close personal walk with God because of the cross
Forgiveness of sin resulting in restoration of fellowship with God
A new community of believers is created as God changes hearts, softens them and equips his children to want to do right. It is the softened hearts which empowers us to change, repent, and walk a straight path following Jesus' light.
PRAYER
Come Holy Spirit, write this New Covenant on our hearts. We need God, Jesus and Holy Spirit to radically change us. Only God can write it upon our hearts. Amen.
