1 John --The Word of Life

A tender appeal to his little children in the faith.

By Diane Ward

The Gospel of John and 1 John belong to the close of the century. The Christian faith was 50 or 60 years by this time and had spread throughout the Roman Empire. Chapter one is a portrait of Jesus Christ as the Word of life. Today’s world shows deep echoes of ancient Gnosticism, a cultural current that prioritizes subjective truth over physical or moral reality.

John was privileged as the youngest of the disciples, and the only one to live into old age. He was known as John the “son of thunder.” John became the apostle of love. Drawn into the closest disciple relationship with Jesus, he rested on Jesus’ breast. This was John, the only disciple who saw Jesus’ suffering on the cross. Imprinted on John’s heart he absorbed a great love for mankind.

This was John who took Mary to live in Ephesus.  Jesus told John to look after Mary and take her into his home. This was John exiled to Patmos 95 AD. John recorded the apocalyptic visions and prophetic messages to the seven churches of Asia Minor.

God is light, and to know Him is to walk in the light. If we confess our sins God is faithful and just. He will forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. John said specifically, “we cannot love a God we cannot see if we fail to love a brother or sister.”

Those who cannot forgive others break the bridge over which they themselves must pass.

PRAYER

Father, do for us that which is past our power to do for ourselves. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit so that we may love one another. Let our lives reflect Your truth to a world in darkness.

Beautiful devotional. I truly appreciated learning more about who John was in the context of this message.
