DAILY READING
REFLECTION
Suffering and Doing Good
By Elaine Pierce
If you read this passage carefully, it is clear that Peter expected his readers to suffer. Take a look:
Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering (v. 12).
Rejoice that you participate in the suferigs of Christ (v. 13).
If you suffer (v. 15).
However, if you suffer as a Christian (v. 16).
So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good (v. 19).
That is a lot of suffering in 7 verses. Yes, the early church experienced a great deal of suffering for following Jesus. And we know that in many parts of the world, Christians today cannot openly practice their faith. Here in Columbus, Ohio, though, it is a different story. We can share our faith with our neighbors, our friends, and our coworkers without fear of punishment. We can attend church, participate in Bible studies, and sing God's praises. Yes, we are blessed beyond measure.
Peter warns those who suffer 'as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler (v. 15)." Clearly, self-imposed suffering brings no honor to the Lord.
What about emotional suffering? Physical suffering? We may not be persecuted because of our faith, but we can - and we do - go through hard times. Peter reminds us to 'continue to do good.'
Who do you know who is suffering? Let's continue to do good - to pray for those who endure persecution. To come alongside loved ones who need our help, a listening ear, a grocery run, a homecooked meal. If you are suffering, don't endure it alone - find hope and strength in the body of Christ.

PRAYER
Lord, so often I take the freedom I have to worship you for granted. Help me to pray daily for those who don't, and to come alongside those who suffer with love, grace, and hope. Amen.
