Drowning in Evil

By Judy Webb

“Your oarsmen take you out to the high seas. But the east wind will break you to pieces far out at sea.” (Ezekiel 26:26)

Tyre was an economic powerhouse and once considered the marketplace for nations. It was a and strong and powerful nation, but prideful and only trusted in itself - not God. That is a clue as to how this story will end. "Pride goes before the fall." Proverbs 16:18

It was said of Tyre that her ships were beautiful and of superior construction with impressive decoration and first-class personnel.

Tarshish was a trading partner, which should give another clue as to the fate of Tyre and her magnificent vessels. Evil and wicked trading practices would soon spell disaster for this prideful nation. They bartered human lives and were especially guilty and cold-blooded in this practice. There was no regard for God their creator and redeemer.

“But the east wind will break you to pieces.” (v 26a)

“By the east wind you shattered the ships of Tarshish.” (Ps 48:7 ESV)

“Like the east wind I will scatter them before the enemy, I will show them my back, not my face, in the day of their calamity.” (Jeremiah 18:17)

In prophecy, the east wind is Babylon – the great storm.  It is likely many from these nations became neighbors after they were taken off to Babylon. We know the prophets Daniel, Ezekiel and Jeremiah were prisoners of Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon.

Greed, debauchery, pride, everything God detests and punishes, were traits of the people of Tyre. If we look around today, many of those same behaviors have taken over our hearts leaving us fair game for a similar ending. Sex trafficking, murder of innocents…all these will be our undoing as well.

When Tyre eventually sank, everyone and everything went down with the ship. Disorder, dismay, confusion and ruin will be at the end of time. But for us, who do believe and do love Jesus and one another, our end is secure and our ship will not sink but rise to the heavens.

PRAYER

Dear Jesus,

Open our eyes to the wicked ways we are falling into. Give is clarity in all the Chaos. Teach us to change our hearts and minds to be more like you everyday. We need Your Redemption and Your Grace. Amen.

"The east wind, as depicted in the Bible, serves as a reminder of God's sovereignty and the reality of His judgment....In the ancient Near East, the east wind was known for its destructive capabilities." Biblehub.com
