REFLECTION

I'm His Favorite!

by Elaine Pierce

Our grandchildren are at that very fun age when they love to be with their grandparents. When we come over for dinner, Maxine and Zoe insist that "Grandma sits by me," or "Grandpa, you sit over here in-between my sister and me." I know this phase won't last, and that friends will become all-important, but I am soaking up this time with them and I relish every opportunity to be with them. Being loved is a deep human desire, and it is a joy to be greeted with happiness and delight when I walk into the room.

In today's passage, we see two of Jesus' disciples, James and John, vying for his attention. They want to be the teacher's pet, don't they?

"Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask... Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory." (vs. 35, 37)

Yes, we thirst to be the best, the favored, the chosen. And the other disciples were understandably annoyed when they heard about their friends' plans to push them aside and grab the limelight. In verses 42-45, Jesus sets them straight and explains, not for the first time, that his kingdom is not like that of the world:

"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (v. 45)

We want to be Jesus' favorite. And we are! He loves each of us with a love beyond measure. He came so all would have eternal life:

"The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." (I Peter 3:9)

Take some time today to thank God for this gift, and to look for ways to express your thanks through worship, service and prayer.

PRAYER

Lord, you chose me, and I am eternally grateful for the gift of life. Help me each day to look to you and to recognize that all I have is from you. I love you, and I long to serve you with a heart full of joy. Amen.
