REFLECTION

The Problem, the Promise, and the Savior

By Judy Webb

“My flock went astray on all the mountains and every high hill. My flock was scattered over the whole face of the earth, and there was no one searching or seeking for them.” (Ezekiel 34:6 NASB)

The Problem - You have probably figured out that we aren’t talking about barnyard animals here, but the people of God. Sheep get lost all the time, as do we - God’s people. From the earliest of time to today, sheep wander, fall into deep holes, and struggle to get themselves out. Don’t we do the same? Don’t we even stumble into the same holes over

and over again?

The Promise - There is no human shepherd who can truly keep us safe from the dangerous pits all around. But praise be to God, we have a good Shepherd. In John 10 Jesus declared Himself as the fulfillment of Ezekiel prophecy. “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.” (John 10:11 NASB)

The Savior - There is an enemy who prowls around for an opportunity to devour us (1 Peter 5:8). But Ezekiel shares God’s promise that Christ’s love for us motivates Him. Our Good Shepherd is ever on guard! We are weak sheep who continually repeat our mistakes, but Jesus the Good Shepherd rescues us, teaches us and loves us through it all.  He is the Savior of all us sheep!

PRAYER

Dear Jesus,

Lent is preparing us for Jesus, the Good Shepherd, to return to us and bring us the salvation we so desperately need. As sheep who constantly fall, your shepherding picks us up and heals our wounds. You teach a better way and you point us to the Cross.
