DAILY READING

REFLECTION

Certain Belief

By Elaine Pierce

The man took Jesus at his word and departed (John 4:50).

As I read and re-read this passage, those words stopped me in my tracks. This royal official (John doesn't tell us his name) begs Jesus to heal his son. Jesus says "You may go. Your son will live." So he does what Jesus says, and on the way home his servants meet him with the amazing news that his boy is better. The result? He and all his household believed (v. 53).

It sounds so straightforward, doesn't it? He asks Jesus for healing. Jesus says it will happen. He believes. He doesn't continue to worry, to doubt. He takes Jesus at his word.

What are promises God has made to us? He will never leave us or forsake us. He will deliver us from evil. When we go through hard times (and we will) he will walk beside us. He offers eternal life for all who believe and call on his name. He is faithful and just. And, friends, I am just scratching the surface.

So why do I so often doubt His goodness? Jesus notes in this passage that many followers only believe because they see His miracles. They need proof that He can do extraordinary things - heal the sick, raise the dead, turn water into wine. He also points out that "a prophet has no honor in his own country (v. 43)." Familiarity does indeed breed contempt. I sometimes think that I wouldn't fret or worry if only I could speak directly to God.....and then I am reminded that I have access 24/7 through His Word and the Holy Spirit.

I am challenged by the example of this unnamed royal official who asked for healing and believed Jesus would do what He said. As we walk through this Lenten season, let's take time to thank God for His promises, and to pray for faith that trusts and believes.

PRAYER

Thank you, Lord, that you always do what you say. When I doubt and when I fear, help me to trust and believe. You are good, you are faithful, you are gracious to forgive and to offer life and hope and grace. Amen.
