REFLECTION

Don't Believe Everything Your Hear

False teachers were causing confusion and dissension among new believers. They were preaching false doctrine and telling the Gentiles they must be circumcised or they were not saved. This so troubled the disciples that they stepped in to provide calm and clarity. They told them God made no distinction between Jew and Gentile believers and then wrote a letter to the Gentile Believers.

“We understand that some men from here have troubled you and upset you with their teachings, but we did not send them “Acts 15:24

This letter explained the truth and enabled them to get on the same page. Being a believer isn’t easy, but it is simple. “You must abstain from eating food offered to idols, from consuming blood, or the meat of strangled animals, and from sexual immorality. If you do this you will do well.” (v.29)

This encouraging message brought peace to them and strengthened their faith. This potentially significant problem was nipped in the bud. How did they accomplish this? They communicated after recognizing something was not right. They talked it out and then went to those who knew them best and would understand their questions. This is a good lesson for all to learn.

The dispute had been resolved so that the teaching and preaching could continue; they didn’t run from the issue, but faced it head on. Disagreements in the church detract from the purpose, to teach and share the Good News, the Gospel of Jesus.

PRAYER

Father God,

So much falsehood exists in our world. Please give us discerning minds to tell truth from lies. Recognizing the truth will save us so much pain, not to mention our salvation depends on truth being the driving force. When in doubt remind us to go to Your Word for all Truth. Amen.
