REFLECTION

The Elimination of Separation through the Crucifixion

By Vincent Jerrome

I am beyond blessed to be writing this after the birth of my son, Harvey. He is my first child, my only son. From the day he was born, he has truly become everything to me. Not only is he part of me, he is also part of the woman I love the most: his mother.

Not one day has gone by that he hasn’t been with her. I may get home late from work and miss that valuable time before bed. She does not. I love him more dearly than I could ever imagined possible, but he is most certainly attached to his mom more than anything in this world. I don’t blame him!

The second mom leaves the room, the tears start rolling and the screams get loud. Mama! He cries at the sight of her not being there. He makes it very clear that there is nothing scarier than the thought of not being with her. Even if his amazing grandma, grandpa, 4 aunties or his awesome dad have him safe in their arms.

This is the first thing that came to mind when reading this passage.

The fears of separation from our Heavenly Creator is something that never leaves. There is zero doubt we will all find ourselves crying at some point from the cares and stresses of this world. Even Christ himself cried out for his father on the cross, perceiving he had forsaken him!

As I have grown, I have learned this is the beautiful mystery of how the Lord works. Only in my times of crying to God, like my son for his mother and Christ Jesus for his Father, where I feel that I have been totally left alone, and where I can not see any way out. In the darkest of nights here on earth.

Then, and only then, does the light of God in heaven shine on us the brightest of all. His love is poured out over us. He gave everything. His only Son and very life on the cross. Washing our sins, quenching the fire of our fears that rage on in our lives.

There is no greater fear than separation from God. But lucky for us, there is no greater love than one to lay down his life. The separation has been eliminated. We have received total grace and forgiveness through the sacrifice of the cross.

Christ did not stay in the grave.

Mama does not leave the room forever. She comes back and swoops Harvey up in her loving arms.

We will not stay on this earth filled with all its fears and separations.

Our souls have been destined through the cross to be in perfect union with Him forever.

We still may cry, but God never leaves.

PRAYER

Lord, when we cry in fear, give us full faith to know that you are here.

The fear of separation is no match for your loving sacrifice.

Let us find comfort in your almighty arms. Amen.
