REFLECTION

Abide and Dwell

by Judy Webb

"Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty." (Verse 1)

During World War 2, this psalm was known as the air raid psalm. The book is called, "Psalm 91: Real Life Stories of God’s Shield of Protection," by Peggy Joyce Ruth and Angelia Ruth Schum. Our group spent several sessions discussing this and applying the verses to our lives. Verses 1-6 recognize God and our protector. There is a Military version of this book that many men and women have taken into battle with them.

This psalm is about trusting in the love of God, the power of God, to give you everything you need to do his will and glorify his name whether you live or die. If we make God our resting place, he will never leave us.

"He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge." (Verse 4)

The song which accompanies this psalm in our series, "Jesus Take the Wheel," is just what Psalm 91 is all about. The verses challenge us to believe implicitly in God and his love. To submit to his care and step out in faith. Jude 21 says to keep yourselves in the love of God, meaning the same as "rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” In John 15:9, Jesus says abide in my love – similar words, “abide in the shelter of the Most High.

The visuals I have when reading verse 9-11 provide a picture of safety and protection we all need at some point in life.

If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.

PRAYER

Lord, all the difficulties we face are easier to overcome when we turn to you; when we walk the path set before us which leads to you. When I am in the midst of great trials prompt me to open my Bible and turn to Psalm 91 and explore my next steps.
