REFLECTION

Trust!

by Kim Starr

Proverbs 3:5-6 is a familiar verse to me because it was set to music one year for Vacation Bible School. You might remember the song (motions are optional, but highly encouraged): “Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight! Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Trust in the Lord with all your heart.” That year, my daughter made a piece of artwork that hangs in my bedroom. It is a board with nails zig zagged on it with various pieces of blue colored yarn. The Bible verse was glued on the board to remind me to trust in the Lord and count on Him to set me on the right path.

While many may be familiar with Proverbs 3:5-6, as I was reading to write this devotional, it was verse 7 that stood out to me: “Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.” How many times had I heard to trust in the Lord, but not realized that within the same message, God was reminding me to not be full of myself, to not take His love for granted, and to not accept evil in my life?

We all need to remember to not think too much of ourselves, our experiences, or our intelligence. We are truly no better than anyone else. We should take a stance where we know that we can always learn something from someone else. Other people have plenty to offer, and we can gain wisdom from them.

We all need to remember to revere the Lord. We are to give Him honor, admiration, praise, deference, and worship. He is our God! We can always count on Him, and He knows what we need even when we do not see it. He guides us on the path He wants us to walk.

We all need to remember to keep away from, and avoid, evil. Evil can come to us in many forms: a person, an object, a place, a TV show, music, activities, or reading material. Evil can be different things to different people. We often know what it is for us, even if we try to ignore it, and it can change over time. Whatever it is, we need to steer clear of it at all costs.

While we avoid that evil, we must turn to God. We must Trust in the Lord. By keeping God in our heart, by trusting in Him and His path, God will make us wise and help us gain understanding. He will prolong our lives, give us blessings, bring us prosperity, and give us a path to peace.

PRAYER

What a blessing it is to have You to keep us on the path You would have us walk. When we waiver, draw us close to You. Make us strong and grounded in You so we can reject evil. Help us to trust in You. Amen
