REFLECTION

Sleep, Safe and Sound

by Julie Ogg

For as long as I can remember, I have struggled with sleep. Growing up, I had vivid dreams, sleep-walked and experienced what are now known as the “Sunday scaries." The first three decades of my life the issue was falling asleep. My brain was filled with worry and planning.

Later, falling asleep became easier after which staying asleep became the issue. According to the National Institute of Health, as of 2022, an estimated 50 to 70 million Americans have chronic sleep disorders. There are myriad physical, emotional, and psychological issues that impair sleep. But what does Scripture have to say about sleep? What do we as followers of Jesus know that might help us sleep?

Today’s passage reminds us that God “builds the house” and “watches over the city." All our attempts to do more and be more and think more just lead to exhaustion if we forget who is ultimately in control. We need the reminder from Psalm 121, “He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.” God invites us to partner with him in his work in this world. It is His work, and He is leading - we are following. Sleep is a gift from our Father who loves us.

Perhaps you’ve been on a trip planned by someone else, maybe even by a professional. More likely, you have been to an event where you were only a participant and someone else was leading. This is a special type of freedom. You might be serving at that event and you might care deeply about the outcome but, ultimately, you are just doing your part and someone else is in charge. This is one way I try to think about my life. While I certainly have the joy and responsibility of growing in Christ and discerning the Spirit’s direction in my life, I am following—not leading. This knowledge brings freedom and rest to my heart and mind.

This is why I can sleep, safe in the knowledge that my Heavenly Father knows the future and will provide everything I need for life and godliness. (2 Peter 1:3) Our experience of God’s care and presence can remind us of the truth of Psalm 4:8. “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety."

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, forgive me for trying to take your place in this world. I know there is rest in understanding my position as your beloved child. Please remind me that you will lead, provide for, and shelter me. Help me to turn my thoughts, plans, and worries over into your care. Thank you for offering me rest for my body and soul.
