Find Rest in God

by Beth Voltmann

Life can be busy and stressful, demanding and draining. Not only does it take a toll on our physical and mental health, but it can empty our spiritual tank as well.

When was the last time you spoke to your soul as David did in this psalm?

"Yes, my soul, find rest in God;

My hope comes from him.

Truly he is my rock and my salvation;

He is my fortress, I will not be shaken."

(Psalm 62:5-6)

Last April, I went to visit one of my daughters in the Pacific Northwest. She asked if I would be willing to come away with her to a special place (hiking would be involved). I packed snow boots, anticipating that the mountain might still be covered in white. We drove an hour from Seattle and then spent another hour ascending the mountain. It was difficult climbing the trail in my heavy boots, especially since the snow had melted away, but when we reached the intended peak, I was so thankful that I had said "yes" to the journey.

We sat quietly before the Lord for a while that day - resting on a rock - enjoying his creation, his presence and his peace. I have this picture as a reminder of that special experience. My daughter knew the rock she was heading to. She knew the breath-taking vista of God’s glory that would lay before us. She knew the effort would greatly refresh our spirits.

Jesus often encouraged his disciples to come away and rest. He still invites us to do the same.

“Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

(Mark 6:31b)

Make it a practice to speak to your soul each week. Listen to Christ’s urging to come away for a while and rest in him. Pour out your heart to him, trust him to restore your spirit. He is the rock on which you will find rest—the firm foundation on which you can place your hope and declare, “I will not be shaken.”

PRAYER

Lord, life often takes hold and we neglect to listen to your voice bidding us to rest. Help us respond - to tend to our souls. We declare you are our rock, our salvation and our fortress now and forevermore. Amen.
