REFLECTION

Be Strong and Courageous

by Judy Webb

"Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord." (Psalm 31:24 NIV)

What a world in which we live! One day we feel encouraged and see a better place to raise our children and grandchildren. We witness good things happening and use these encouraging glimpses into a better world to help us navigate one more day. Then, something unthinkable takes place and we are right back at square one, viewing the world from a dark place, a hopeless and terrifying place. We have more questions than answers and we are overwhelmed with fear.

"Be brave. Be strong. Don’t give up. Expect God to get here soon." (Psalm 31:24 MSG)

This is when Christians turn to Jesus, to the Bible, for strength to discover meaning. It is in the Bible we find a more positive and confident stance to take. Our expectation changes from shadowy darkness to spotting a faint hint of light on the horizon. We understand that Jesus loves us, and we only need to surrender our problems to Him for things to change.

  1. Be Brave. Hope and trust in the Lord. Faith is not a one-time commitment. A life of faith lets God be God.

  2. Be Strong. During seasons of doubt and trouble, proactively seek Godly input. Go to a friend for advice, read your Bible for a Word of Wisdom. Proverbs 10:17 “Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray."

  3. Do not give up. Take the next step, stay on the path. Study Isaiah 40:31 and draw courage from these words: "but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary they will walk and not be faint."

God will indeed get here soon; He has gone ahead of us. He has paved the way. Praise God for His faithfulness. We need courage and strength in the trials of life because there will be trouble. It is in these trials our faith grows and our testimony becomes practical.

PRAYER

God, give us a simple snapshot of a tomorrow which fills us with hope. Shine your light on the good around us so that we can begin to walk toward this path and stay the course. Remind us that faith is not a one time commitment, but the only way to live. Amen.
