Where Does My Help Come From?

By Judy Webb

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?” Matthew 6:25 (NIV)

Worry: mental distress, make anxious, agitation, that touch or disturb. These are some of the definitions of worry as Merriam-Webster defines it.

How do you define it? It is a daily part of your life, your thought processes? Scripture tells us in no uncertain terms that worry is not something we should do. There is nothing more unproductive than to lose precious sleep over something that God should be handing for us. He will, you know!

What do people most often worry about? According to Google, financial security, personal and family health, job stability, and the unpredictable state of the world. These are all God-sized issues; meaning only God can take them off our plate. As the end of verse 25 reminds us, “Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?” Isn’t it? What do you say, do you agree? Then, why do these things disturb our sleep, our peace of mind?

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains where does my help come from? My help comes from the Maker of heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1-2 (NIV)

So then, what do we do when the inevitable worry surfaces; and it will. Three necessary actions to take:

1.    Look up

2.    Pray                             Simple right?

3.    Listen

4.    Trust

Look Up: Don’t walk around with a sad face or a troubled persona but look up to the heavens where all our help originates. Open the Bible and seek answers.

Pray: Lay out all your fears at the foot of the cross where Jesus can gather them up and take them away. Prayer is talking to God and often times these conversations leave us feeling so much better, empowered even. That is what prayer does. It gives us a sense of God’s presence, so we no longer feel alone with our worries. We can know that He is handling it.

Listen: After looking up and then praying it is time to put on our listening ears. Shut down all the outside noise and listen for God’s wisdom and reassurance that He has it handled. If He needs more from us, He will let us know.

Trust: When we believe that God is on our side, that He loves us and hears our prayers, we can trust that it is now His burden to bear. When we trust God to provide, when we look up, pray, then listen--worry seems so much a waste of time and energy.

These four actions are the secret sauce to having peace of mind and a right spirit.

PRAYER

Dear Jesus,

We have much to learn about worry. We need to trust you, and believe that you have our best interests at heart. Then we only need to recognize when we begin to worry over something and take the next right step. You will light the path.
