My Faith, Your Free Gift

By Judy Webb

This is what the LORD says: "Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight," declares the LORD." (Jeremiah 9:23-24)

One commentary indicated these two verses are considered two of the most popular lines in the Book of Jeremiah. Have you ever read these lines before; did they impact you? I know “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…" (2 Timothy 3:16) So, now that God has our attention, what is He wanting to teach us today? Knowing we are probably in for a great surprise and learning experience, let’s pray for ears to hear. (Mark 4:23)

Our faith is a priceless gift of God. It is not something we deserve or have earned in any fashion. It is a gift, not something we should brag about, but perhaps it is something we need to share. We should feel obligated to tell others about our faith and the journey God has us on because of it.

My story isn’t something I need to crow about. On the contrary, I should give all the glory to God for this faith I possess. I recognize that if my ears were not open to heed God’s prompting when I was at my lowest, I would not have taken that step of faith. I might not have cried out to God for help, and I certainly would not have submitted my pain nor confessed my guilt to God, as I sought Him that day. This fact is the only reason I can boast is because of Jesus.

“Therefore, as it is written: ’Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” (1 Corinthians 1:31)

PRAYER

Dear Jesus,

Humility doesn't come easy for us, but your word today encourages us to consider boasting about our faith as wrong. We need to humbly remind ourselves that without You and Your love for us, we would never know the peace we now can embrace. Thank You.
