True Wisdom
By Elaine Pierce
This past Christmas season, I listened to Handel's Messiah....a lot. The music is beautiful and soaring and uplifting, and the words - oh my, the words - all drawn from scripture - paint an incredible picture of our God and King. Today's scripture contrasts the 'wisdom' of the world with God's wisdom. I was reminded of this verse that Handel included in his Oratorio:
"Worthy is the Lamb that was slain... to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing." (Chorus, Revelation 5:12)
As Paul tells us, "God has made foolish the wisdom of the world...For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength (vs. 20, 25)."
St. Augustine wrote in his Confessions that "You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you." We look for signs and miracles. We look for wisdom from scholars and learned men. We won't ever find true peace, true fulfillment, apart from Jesus.
As we turn the calendar to 2026, let's look to Jesus for our hope, our peace, and yes, the wisdom that can only come from him. What joy we will experience when we recognize that he is the way, the truth and the life, and that all of the degrees, the power, the wealth of the world can't fill us and satisfy us. Joy to the world! The Lord has come.
PRAYER
Lord, so often I look to the world for fulfillment. Help me today and every day to seek your wisdom, your love, your truth. Thank you for each day, and forgive me when I fall short. Thank you for your saving grace. Amen.

What a great idea to listen to Handel's Messiah during Advent! 🤔 well, there are still 2 days left until Epiphany!
