REFLECTION
The Shroud that Enfolds Us
by Jennifer Jerrome
A shroud is a thing that envelops or obscures something. The most well-known is the Shroud of Turin or Holy Shroud which scholars have debated for hundreds of years whether it is the actual burial cloth of Jesus. Regardless of its authenticity, the shroud in verse 7 of today’s reading is as real as it gets.
"On this mountain he will destroy
the shroud that enfolds all peoples,
the sheet that covers all nations;
he will swallow up death forever."

This shroud is not an actual sheet but a reference to the “death” that envelops us. As Christians, we believe that though our body dies, our soul will live on.
We are no longer obscured by sin and death because of Jesus’ sacrifice. His resurrection gave us new life and we are called by Isaiah in verse 9 to rejoice and be glad in this salvation.
As 2022 begins, may we trust in the Lord’s renewal and break free from those things that obscure us – that bind us to this earth. May we exalt and praise the name of the Lord. Thanks be to God, our refuge and shelter!
PRAYER PRACTICE
Spoken Prayer – Out loud, pray for God to speak to you through your reading. Praise God for giving us His word. Ask the Spirit to help you read with faith, and to live out what you hear from God through the passage.
