Come Into the Light

By Beth Voltmann

Love – Life – Light

I have circled these three words in my Bible from today’s reading as I contemplate how John often recorded Jesus’ own (red letter) words testifying to the truth of who he was - who he is - who he ever will be.

Love – For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son...” (John 3:16)

Life – “I am the way and the truth and the life.” (John 14:6)

Light – “I am the light of the world.” (John 8:12)

Most mornings, I pour my cup of coffee, climb the stairs, and sit at my desk to spend some quiet time with the Lord. As I gaze out on the darkness of the early hours, it always amazes me to watch the morning light break through.

In the beginning of Creation when darkness was over the surface of the deep, God declared Let there be light”. (Genesis 1:3) Similarly, when the set time had fully come (Galatians 4:4), our loving God sent spiritual light, his own Son, to a dark and broken world.

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:4-5)

When we focus our gaze at the world around us, it certainly seems that the darkness it trying to overcome the light. At times I feel as if it is winning! Evil hates goodness, darkness hates light, and therefore, everyone who does evil hates the light”. (John 3:20)

But, dear Believer, don’t lose heart! Jesus declared whoever lives by the truth comes into the light. (John 3:21)

The truth of Jesus shatters the darkness. This is what has compelled me in the past year to pray for my family each morning before the light breaks through the darkness. The love - life - light of Jesus was sent by God to save us. No darkness can defeat us. No shadows can hide us. The Son has risen. Come into his Light!

PRAYER

Father God,

The darkness of this world would be overwhelming if it wasn’t for the love, life, and light that you sent. Thank you for the gift of Jesus. You have made his light shine in our hearts, and therefore we have salvation and hope! We continue to watch and pray for those who are yet in darkness. May they come into the light of Christ Jesus, the Savior of the world.

Lord, hear our prayer.

Amen.
