But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus. Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. (Matthew 12:14-15a)
We notice a trend here. Often when Jesus is on the outs with the Pharisees, it is on the Sabbath and Jesus has just cured or healed someone. This action is considered work in the closed-minded eyes of the religious leaders of this time. They are just looking for a reason to point out a flaw in Jesus’ character as he is becoming very popular and well liked. Crowds follow him everywhere he goes.

Up to this point the Pharisees had been friendly for they wanted to hitch their wagon to Jesus’ star and go with him. They desired the popularity Jesus held in the eyes of the people. But the Lord refused to go along with their way of thinking, and they soon considered Jesus their enemy.
How often do I behave in a similar fashion? Do I consider my faith-walk important enough to take a stand on important issues of the day? Do I feel brave enough to back up my views by using God’s Word to support them? Will I stand up against what I know to be wrong even if these beliefs offend someone?
This is heavy stuff and we are certain to be challenged at some point in our lives by those who have differing viewpoints. As we learn in 1 Peter 3:15, we must “be prepared to give the reason for the hope we have.” That means get ready to tell your story, to share your testimony of how Jesus changed your life by His Word.
When Jesus was teaching the crowds (and the Pharisees), He was telling them about love and compassion for the sick and hurting all around. But, because the Pharisees were seeking power and control, it soon became a conflict between good and evil. This conflict continues today.
PRAYER
Dear Lord,
As time moves us closer to your return, give us courage and a strong and steady faith to be prepared. Give us the words our friends and neighbors need to hear and help us to stand strong in Your life-giving word. Amen.
