REFLECTION

I Am With You Always

by David Thompson

The scripture for today is very reassuring and historical. God is always watching and is always there, even in the flood or the fire, "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you." (v. 2 NIV) It reminds me of a story Pastor David White tells of his younger days when he was in charge of a struggling youth center. He didn't know that the people in charge were going to shut down the whole operation if he didn't succeed in turning the center he was in charge of around. He decided to use ministry (God) principals to revamp the place. At 24 years of age, he was a bit over his head. But as it turned out, David gave God the glory as things turned around. David was able to turn the struggling center around and tripled the membership. God was there when he needed Him the most. God is a God of possibilities. Think back through your life for times when things looked bleak. Consider how God was there in the situation and how He worked to help you turn it around.

In the passage (v. 4-7), God tells the Israelites that He gathered them from the North, South, East, and West. He traded lands and people with the Persians and Babylonians to get the new land and His people secured. He wants all to be witnesses to His faithfulness.

The Message bible verses 10-12 reads, "But you are my witnesses. God’s Decree. You’re my handpicked servant. So that you’ll come to know and trust me, understand both that I am and who I am. Previous to me there was no such thing as a god, nor will there be after me. I, yes I, am God. I’m the only Savior there is. I spoke, I saved, I told you what existed long before these upstart gods appeared on the scene. And you know it, you’re my witnesses, you’re the evidence. God’s Decree. Yes, I am God. I’ve always been God and I always will be God."

God tells His people that He is the only God; all other gods have come after Him and only He can save. It is reassuring that I believe that and, because it is true, all of the promises of our God will come true. The promise of eternal life is also numbered in those promises. As stated in the last paragraph, due to all of that, we ought to be happy to be His witnesses wherever we go. We owe Him so much.

PRAYER PRACTICE

Spoken Prayer: Out loud, pray for God to speak to you through your reading. Praise God for giving us His word. Ask the Spirit to help you read with faith, and to live out what you hear from God through the passage.
