DAILY READING
REFLECTION
TITLE
by Judy Webb
The end of all things is near. Therefore, be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins. (1 Peter 4:7-8)
How’s your prayer life? Strange question? Prayer is an integral part of a Christians’ life. But prayer isn’t something all of us are comfortable with. Once we practice praying for each other and genuinely asking God for what is needed it becomes easier and even more natural. Prayer strengthens relationships.
Prayer is not only powerful, but an important daily practice in the life of a Christian. How can we get through one day without turning to God in conversation, and confession, laying it all out before Him? Prayer is talking to God, then listening for His response. It is admitting we don’t know it all but acknowledge that He does.
To be of sober mind is to be focused, not caught up in the sins of our past but alert to the traps of the devil. In chapter 5 at verse 8 we read: “be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” So, why pray? For guidance, direction, and understanding. And for protection from the roaring lion.
When alert and sober and praying regularly (not occasionally, but often), we become equipped to love each other deeply. Loving one another by serving each other and having another’s best interests in mind. We serve each other when we use the gifts God has given each of us, to help our neighbor, a stranger, or a family member who needs help. Ways to serve are all around, we only need to be open to reaching out. Make that phone call, smile at that crabby cashier, leave a generous tip when you can.
PRAYER
Dear Lord,
Thank you for the gift of prayer. Thank you, that we can turn to you and ask for help in any situation. Thank you, that you hear us and respond. Amen.
Nice work in making the case for regular prayer. I am sure many will be helped by your dividing this passage with such clarity.
