There is More Where This Came From

By Judy Webb

Following Jesus and His disciples through the Gospel of John has been enlightening, heartbreaking, convicting, and heart-warming. From the first verse, “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1) to the culmination of the story, we are captivated by the scope and enormity of the account. Perhaps this is one reason many will point new believers to this Gospel as the place to begin their journey with Jesus as the disciples did.

Have you ever noticed that so much takes place around the dinner table? Many meaningful discussions, important decisions and memory making moments take place at mealtimes - around the family table. You may observe this in your own family. Laughter and tears are part of these poignant precious times. We are reminded of this as we dig into our lesson.

The scene begins when Jesus invites His disciples to “Come and have breakfast” (v12). I can only imagine the conversation that day. It was during His 3rd visit with them since the Resurrection. Perhaps there were many questions and a bit of time spent traveling up and down memory lane. Picture the scene, these men bound together by their love of Jesus, sharing a meal of fresh caught fish. The stories one might hear. Oh, to be a mouse around that campfire!

The final verse from this Gospel, chapter 21:25 serves as a teaser, a dangling carrot leaving us wanting more, knowing there is more. “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose the whole world would not have room for all the books that would be written.”

Indeed! No single book could house the works of Jesus’ earthly ministry. This tells us there is much more to discover about the life of Jesus, about His love for us, and the unconditional nature of this love. Just think of the book that could be written of your own faith journey and those of  others who lived and died for Jesus. Again, to be an eavesdropping mouse!

PRAYER

Dear Lord,

Thank you for this precious time, sharing meals with loved ones and processing life together. These are such opportunities for making memories that will last a life time. It is these precious memories which draw us to you as we recognize your hand in our everyday habits. Amen

Thanks, Judy. I love this idea and instead of his wonderous works being scattered in several journals, maybe I will write specific things down in one.... Psalm 105 encourages us to tell of all his wondrous works!

If only families WOULD sit down and ear dinner TOGETHER! Too many that I know stand in the kitchen and eat when and and what they wish. When our kids were young (and even now George and I) really sit down at the same time together to eat. Many good stories could be written, as you said, about our family time together. Those stories still come up in family conversations even today such as the daughter who doesn't like peas and we found out that she put them under the table edge instead of eating them! They were found when we put an additional leaf in the table! And so I ramble on. But as you said, imagine the…
