REFLECTION

Values Vindicated

by Judy Webb

See, a king will reign in righteousness

and rulers will rule with justice.

Each one will be like a shelter from the wind

and a refuge from the storm,

like streams of water in the desert

and the shadow of a great rock in a thirsty land. (Isaiah 32:1-2)

This devotion, based on Isaiah 32:1-8, could be titled, "In a Perfect World." Each time I scoured these verses (and they were many), I felt encouraged and hopeful. It is as though God has been in my head and reading my thoughts. As a Christian, I know that everything will be set right when Jesus returns, but some days I just need an extra dose of that truth, presented as only the prophet Isaiah can.

Lent is a season of introspection, a time for self-examination and an opportunity to repent and move forward. It also is a time to dream about tomorrow, about a future that is safe because of the salvation Jesus has provided by His death and Resurrection. This salvation also encompasses positive changes in our lives and in the society we live in. The words from today’s daily reading paint a picture of what society in general and our government in particular could look like under the leadership of godly people.

Scoundrels use wicked methods, they make up evil schemes… But the noble make noble plans, and by noble deeds they stand. (v. 7-8)

Can you envision our world today with believers in Jesus Christ at the helm, leading our nation and our world? Utopia? Yes. An oasis to be sought after? Another resounding Yes – by prayer. Prayer changes everything and everyone who practices a life of prayer – even for things we deem impossible. Jesus showed us by His Resurrection from the dead, that nothing is impossible.

Proverbs 8:15 – “By me kings reign and rulers issue decrees that are just.”

Dear Jesus, remind me when I am feeling unsure of tomorrow, that You are already there. Teach me every day the value of prayer. Convict me to pray for our leaders and to also pray that some of us who are believers might consider being visible and perhaps even on the ballot in the coming years. Amen
