REFLECTION

A Shield of Protection

by Judy Webb

Recently, my small group studied this Psalm, using a book called, “Psalm 91 – God’s Shield of Protection” by Peggy Joyce Ruth. I am convinced it is no coincidence that we began reading this book and learning about this powerful Psalm in January of 2019. Just before the world as we knew it, took a great big turn.

I love everything about this Psalm. When I was first learning about Jesus, but still so stuck in the ways of the world, the visuals some of the verses provided, gave me hope. So much that goes on in our lives seems to smother our dreams and keeps us in chains; our daily living appears pointless and repetitive. There is no joy, no hope, no obvious way out. That was where I found myself for so many years, until…

Until God used a number of people over a number of years, to show me His goodness. They revealed the love of Jesus simply by accepting me and coming alongside me for a season. “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” (v 4)

We may feel so very undeserving of his protection, his love and forgiveness, but God is the God of second chances. This Psalm echoes that reality. We only need to turn to God and begin our walk of faith over and over each day. We are all sinful, God knows this is our nature. But He is so much bigger than our fears and our feelings of inadequacy. “For he gave is angels charge concerning you, to guard you in all your ways.” (v 11)

Open your Bible to this Psalm and begin to read each verse, paying close attention to what God might be saying. Look for the encouraging words you need to hear, seek out the promises of his mighty protection for you, lean into the words of love and comfort which God has for you today. Breathe in deeply, these words meant just for you, and treasure them.

PRAYER PRACTICE

Spoken Prayer – Out loud, pray for God to speak to you through your reading. Praise God for giving us His word. Ask the Spirit to help you read with faith, and to live out what you hear from God through the passage.
