In Confirmation instruction, young people come to understand what followers of Jesus believe. Students learn to articulate their faith and, most importantly, ultimately publicly confirm their desire to live out a life-long heart relationship with Jesus Christ at a Confirmation ceremony held in their worship community.
At UALC, we begin this process for fifth grade students and their parents. Parents are
the most influential teachers of this life with Jesus. We require one parent to attend (and encourage both mom and dad to join) the classes for students in grades 5 through 8—The Sacraments, The Lord’s Prayer, The Apostles' Creed and The Ten Commandments. Once the student has completed these classes, the next step is to attend the Confirmation Classes and Retreat any year in high school. Some students are ready in ninth grade, but others may find that waiting a year or two is best.
The Sacraments Class (Fifth Graders)
Includes an overview, celebration of a Jewish Seder meal, teachings on baptism and Holy Communion and accepting Christ as one’s personal Savior. Concludes with a Saturday morning gathering to bake communion bread, create a visual reminder of First Communion and experience a dramatic teaching guaranteed to help the parent and student remember why baptism and communion are vital to our faith. Typically, fifth graders and parents attend, but older students are welcome.
The Lord's Prayer Class (Sixth Graders)
Students and parents discover why we pray. We use the petitions of the Lord’s Prayer to learn about God’s priorities, God’s provision, God’s power to forgive, God’s protection and God’s victory. Recommended for sixth graders and parents, but seventh and eighth graders are welcome.
The Apostles' Creed Class (Seventh Graders)
Designed to clarify what it means to believe in God—Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Seventh graders and parents come to understand the meaning of each part of the Apostles' Creed and why this creed is important for Christians. Eighth graders and parents are welcome to attend in order to complete all classes prior to High School Review.
The Ten Commandments Class (Eighth Graders)
Learn to understand the distinction between the Law and Gospel, the meaning of each of the Ten Commandments, living in reconciled relationship with God and others, and why the Commandments are important to our daily life in the 21st century. Especially for eighth graders and parents and the final class in the series, preparing young people for High School Confirmation; click here for more info.
