Frequently Asked Questions

What are Sunday Mornings Like?

There are a number of things we hope you will experience on Sunday morning. First, we hope you'll feel welcome. People come to church for many reasons; whatever your reasons we hope that you'll know we're glad you are here and want to help you find what you're looking for.

As for particulars, you will likely be welcomed by greeters or regulars as you come into our buildings (each campus has its own personality so there's some diversity at Lytham Road, Mill Run and Hilltop). There are nursery and Sunday School classes for children and Adult Education for grown ups (again, much diversity between the campuses; for a list of adult classes click here). At our suburban campuses we are likely to have several services happening at the same time.

What are your services like?

We have differing worship services that use various styles of music to sing our faith. Click here for a map to our campuses.
  • In our Lytham Road and Mill Run Sanctuaries, our Lytham Road Celebration and Mill Run Sanctuary services are led by a praise team, with keyboard, guitar, bass and drum accompaniment.
  • In the Sanctuary at Lytham Road are Traditional services led by the organ and choir with hymns and liturgy.
  • The Fellowship Hall Xalt services at Lytham Road and Mill Run are casual, use a variety of media, and are accompanied by keyboard, guitar, bass, and percussion.
  • If you’re interested in an Urban worship experience, go to our Hilltop campus. The racially mixed and culturally diverse congregation is led with a variety of musical styles.
You are welcome at any of our services. All are creative, Biblically based and God focused. Please try them out and find the one that is the best vehicle to help you to give glory to God. If you have questions, please contact the Community Leader of a service.

Will I have to give money?

We offer all of our services free of charge! We don't want our guests to feel uncomfortable or see money as an obstacle to coming and hearing about God. We will take an offering during the services which is an opportunity for our regular attenders and members to worship God through giving. There are no expectations for you to participate so please do not feel obligated to put anything in the offering. We are just excited to have you be our guest!

Will you draw attention to me or make me stand up?

No way. We offer people as much anonymity as you desire so you can evaluate whether or not UALC is a place you want to settle down. We basically want to help you find what you are looking for, whether it's at our church or somewhere else. To do this we hope you will take the initiative and let us know you were our guest by filling out a Connect Card found in the pocket of the welcome folders, or here with our online Connect Card. You will not be asked to stand or distinguish yourself in any way, but we are very excited you are here and would love a chance to get to know you.

Your church seems so big. How can I get to know people?

Because we know that it can be a bit awkward at first, we are happy to provide some environments where you can get a feel for who we are and what we are about, like our New Member Class (formerly called Believe) and Alpha program. If you would like to make an appointment with one of our staff and talk further, don’t hesitate to let us know and we'll get in touch with you. You can e-mail Brodie Taphorn, or call 451-3736, ext.7028.

What about baptisms, funerals and weddings?

Baptisms, funerals and weddings all mark important experiences in our lives. UALC is pleased to celebrate and mourn these significant moments with you. Find out more here.

Why the three campuses?

In the mid-50s, Upper Arlington Lutheran Church started in the basement of a pastor’s home. Since then, more and more people have felt drawn to this community as a place to experience God and build relationships with people. Over the years, adding communities has been part of God’s plan to accommodate our growth. Presently we are in three communities: on the Hilltop (the near west side), in Upper Arlington and the Mill Run area of Hilliard.  Who knows where God will grow us up next?
